چکیده

Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 81(6): 950-953 (1988) ABSTRACT A simple root-warming device maintains the plants' roots at a higher temperature than that at which the rest of the plant is held. This permits the host plant to retain turgor, not wilt, and therefore remain suitable for and attractive to phytophagous insects. The technique was demonstrated in a development and fecundity test using the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, reared on cotton seedlings, Gossypium hirsutum L., at foliar temperatures of 10.0 and 12.S°C. Root temperatures were held at 200C. The device was also tested at a foliar temperature of 7.SoC in an additional fecundity test. In a control test, no differences were found in development rate, fecundity, or survivorship for aphids reared on plants with foliage at ISOC and roots at IS or 200C.

Effect of Heat Stress Duration on Growth, Flowering and Electrolyte Leakage in Four Cultivars of Calendula officinalis

In the floriculture industry, the need for heat tolerant bedding plant cultivars is increasing because of the rising temperature around the world. A pot experiment was carried out to examine the impacts of four heat stress durations (0, 7, 14 and 21 days) on growth and ornamental traits to determine the relative heat tolerance of four cultivars of calendula (Calendula officinalis). Growth and d...

Host plant choice in the comma butterfly-larval choosiness may ameliorate effects of indiscriminate oviposition.

In most phytophagous insects, the larval diet strongly affects future fitness and in species that do not feed on plant parts as adults, larval diet is the main source of nitrogen. In many of these insect-host plant systems, the immature larvae are considered to be fully dependent on the choice of the mothers, who, in turn, possess a highly developed host recognition system. This circumstance al...

Phytophagous insect oviposition shifts in response to probability of flower abortion owing to the presence of basal fruits

Phytophagous insects use a wide range of indicators or associated cues to avoid laying eggs in sites where offspring survival is low. For insects that lay eggs in flowers, these unsuitable sites may be created by the host plant's resource allocation to flowers. In the sequentially flowering host plant, Yucca glauca, late-opening distal flowers are more likely to be aborted in the presence of al...

Insects on plants: macroevolutionary chemical trends in host use.

Determining the macroevolutionary importance of plant chemistry on herbivore host shifts is critical to understanding the evolution of insect-plant interactions. Molecular phylogenies of the ancient and speciose Blepharida (Coleoptera)-Bursera (Burseraceae) system were reconstructed and terpenoid chemical profiles for the plant species obtained. Statistical analyses show that the historical pat...
